Omawumi's early music days may not sound interesting because she only sang in the bathroom and her audience were just the sponge, water and soap. Her mum and sibs overheard her every now and then but it didn't look like a big deal because her primary assignment was to go to school and get a degree.
Her music sojourn started to take shape when she enrolled to be auditioned for the West African version of idols, tagged - 'IDOLS WEST AFRICA' in January 2007.
Though her vocal prowess and captivating persona did not take her to the number one spot of the competition but she was still applauded as the 1st runner up at the end of the day.
She may not have achieved so much for partaking in that competition but judging by how far her fellow contestant and eventual winner of the competition, Timi Dakolo has come, she seem to be the winner that never got the cup. And to say her fan base from Idols is still intact will be stating the obvious. Her single, In the Music undoubtedly had added more heads to her camp.
Earlier that night (Hip Hop World Awards - May 16, 2009), she had been named winner, best female vocalist of the year, but the comical songstress fell flat to the ground after she was announced winner of the 'Next Rated' category. A playback of the scene will make one wonder why her reflex was 'passing out' and 'springing up'. Reacting to this, she says - "I felt elated, excited, surprised...then numb and immediately immerse in gratitude".
Well, if Hip Hop World Awards is truly the most credible awards on this part of the continent, then awarding Omawumi was definitely not an oversight. The judges only confirmed what the listening Nigerians and her fans had said with their votes.
"I was Surprised cos I didn't think I was going to get it....it wasn't like I felt lesser of myself or I wasn't sure but I felt it would be too much...! you know I'm barely 2 years old in the industry, it's not like people don't achieve that much on such a little time, I thought it'd take longer than that; in fact I felt blessed" she said.
